Ludwig II's best known castle.
A 2 hour train ride takes us to Füssen followed by a quick transfer to the village of Hohenschwangau, above which proudly sits perhaps the most famous castle in the world, Neuschwanstein. Built in the style of a mediaeval Germanic castle of the 12th century, its interior pays homage to the sagas which formed the basis of many of Wagner's operas. King Ludwig never lived long enough to completely live out his fantasy but one person used it to great effect, namely Walt Disney; Neuschwanstein became a central feature of "Sleeping Beauty" and "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang".
9-10 hours €390 plus entrance fees (Approx €14 p.p.). There is also the option of visiting the neighbouring Hohenschwangau castle, where Ludwig spent much of his childhood (Combiticket €25 p.p.). Involves some uphill walking.
